White Rose

White Rose

Roses grow extremely well in the Costa Blanca and there are a great selection at most garden centres.
Roses prefer to grow amongst other roses and like plenty of air. They should be fed during their flowering season and watered regularly.

They are reasonably priced and give good colour for quite a long time.

Technology in Calpe Fish Market

Calpe Fish Market

Calpe Fish Market

Before the advent of the new technology in the Calpe Fish Market, the sale of fish from the boats was held daily in the fish hall. It consisted of boxes of fish being auctioned by the person in charge calling out the price. It started at a high price and then descended very rapidly until someone put their hand up to buy and the priced was settled.

This procedure is now highly technical and most interesting to watch. Firstly the hall has tiered benches either side where prospective purchases sit to await the arrival of the fish. In the middle of the hall is a conveyor belt which holds the boxes of fish and above the belt is a cable running from one end to the other. Attached to the belt is a large red arrow and as the boxes of fish move along each one stops below the red arrow. At the same time there is a large electronic plaque which shows firstly the price in pesetas, then the name of the fishing boat, the type of fish in the box being auctioned, the number of boxes, the price in euros and the weight. On the last line is the name of the purchaser. All this is in the Valencio language.

Again the price starts high and gradually reduces and in order to bid you have to have a gadget which looks like a mobile telephone and when you want to bid you press the top of the gadget. The box of fish then moves along and there is a young man who throws a large amount of ice on top of the fish. The box moves further along and a ticket is issued automatically from a machine and drops into the basket.

At the end of the hall in a glass fronted office a man sits at a computer to record the whole transaction.

All this is carried out very rapidly and makes for an interesting hour or two. The auction starts around 5.0 p.m. You can enter the hall through glass doors to the left of the building, mount the stairs and view from the gallery.

Calpe pictures of moors

Calpe pictures of moors

A most interesting morning can be spent exploring the old town of Calpe.
Start at the top end of the Gabriel Miro, the main street in Calpe and turn right which will take you into the old town. You will arrive at the Carrer Major, which was the main street of the old town and you are in a delightful square with the most fantastic mural painted on the side of a building. This shows facades of buildings.

At the beginning of several of the narrow streets, you will see the sign Ruta Turistica. It is worth following this route, which will lead you to further beautiful squares, again with the most delightful and colourful murals. One near the church shows a beautiful scene of the moors.

There is also a historical museum. This is a tall narrow building with a clock in the centre; it has steps leading to the front door and is open from 10.30 a.m. to 1.0 p.m. and from 5.0 p.m. to 8.0. p.m. Mondays to Fridays.

The Town Hall is also in a square, again with murals.

There are also some very interesting restaurants in the old town.

This has a neat growth and very pretty violet flowers. It is ideal for planting in the garden and flowers for much of the year, requiring only a small amount of water. It can also be planted in tubs and kept trimmed and would then, of course, require more watering and feeding.
It is available at garden centres thoughout the Costa Blanca

A Walk to Albir Lighthouse

Albir Lighthouse Walk

Albir Lighthouse Walk

This walk has now been made extremely beautiful by the making of beautiful rustic fences, various interesting notices en route and a very well maintained concrete lane. The walk follows the coast line with splendid views of Calpe rock and the bay of Albir and Altea. It is a very easy walk with very little gradient, and is 5 kilometres, in total.
To start the walk drive through Altea towards Benidorm on the N332 and turn left at the signpost to Albir. Follow the signs to El Tiburon restaurant and continue until the Sierra Helada begins and you will arrive at a car park on the right hand side.

Follow the lane which will lead you to the lighthouse.

There are plenty of wild flowers and herbs along the way with the most stunning views. All along the way are various notices giving details of plants and flowers. About half way, on the left hand side you will see the remains of the old ochre mines. These were worked through Roman times into the Middle Ages and up to the beginning of the 20th century. There is a footpath leading down to the remains. Some of the mine entrances are open and you can explore them. Inside are the red and orange veins of the ochre.

A little further along on the right hand side there is a very large cave entrance. It is called “La Boca de la Ballena” which means the whale´s mouth and is, in fact, a shelter.

A little further there is a footpath on the right hand side which takes you to a viewing point. It is worth taking this short diversion as at the top is a plaque giving details of the conservation scheme, saving various micro reserve fossil dunes, prickly juniper, crowberry broom, thyme, and various other plants.

You will arrive at a pair of large iron gates which are locked. If you wish to continue to the lighthouse there is a path to the left of the gates which will take you to the other side and from there the lighthouse is only about 200 metres.

This is probably one of the most colourful and versatile plants in Spain. There are several colours: mauve being the most common and easy to grow, orange, red, cyclamen and white. They can be grown as hedges, climbing plants and also in tubs or large pots. The mauve plant flowers almost all the year, having a short rest in mid-winter.
