A Walk to the top of Montgo

Montgo Mountain

Montgo Mountain

Half Way View!

Half Way View!

The Montgo mountain lies in the northern Costa Blanca. On the north side you have Denia and Javea on the south.
The Montgo is an important nature park that offers a range of interesting varieties of Mediterranean flora.

In the 19th century, the peak of the Montgo mountain served as a reference point for calculating the Paris meridian.

If you look at the mountain from the Javea side you can see an indentation which looks like the eye of an elephant.

To commence your walk to the top you can start at the path which is just outside the village of Jesus Pobre on the road towards Javea on the left hand side.

The walk takes approximately three and a half hours each way and the path is mainly a rough track of stones.
The last part of the walk to reach the summit is a bit of a scramble but the view at the top is worth the effort. On a clear day you can see the island of Ibiza.

The mountain is elongated, rich in vegetation and rises sharply from the sea to guard the coast from a height of 753 metres.
This peak surveys the entire Marina Alta district. In the spring there are hundreds of different wild flowers en route. Remember to take plenty of water with you.

A Walk to Benimarco

If you live in Moraira, drive to the Avenue de Mediterraneo (the dual carriageway in Teulada) and begin your walk from here. Continue to the camino de San Miguel where you will pass the Creueta del Ave Maria (a cast iron cross with a ceramic inscription).

Take the lane to the right and you will arrive at the Font del Horta which has two outlets and a small watering place. The fountain gives tranquility and natural beauty.

From there we can continue on the Cami del Boticari, starting behind this font. On arriving at the Cami del Pouet del Moro, we turn to the right, passing in front of the well which dates back to the middle ages, until we reach the road to Benimarco, a typical rural hamlet shared by both Teulada and Benisa with many interesting properties in Benisa, Teulada and Moraira.

Along the walk you will see many worksheds, typical of this region.
We finish our tour in the square where the hermitage of Sant Jaume lies. The building, with a single nave, is comparable to those of the so-called “conquest” churches . In the square there is a balcony with a great view of the sea.

You can walk back to Teulada via Cami de Sant Miquel in which case you walk through Cami de Buseit, which starts by the hermitage and finishes on the urbanisation “La Coma dels Frares”, a beautiful countryside.

Moraira Walks

La Cala Beach

La Cala Beach

A walk from El Portet to the beach of Moraig of Benitachell

This is a most beautiful walk of approximately 4 kilometres, estimate about 3hrs. 15 minutes there and back. The route runs through one of the most beautiful and striking areas of this countryside that ends at the beach of La Cala.

Start the walk from the Cami de la Viuda (this is the road before you reach the beach of El Portet in Moraira.

Continue uphill towards Calle Canario, the path is then signposted.

You are approaching one of the last areas that retain a great part of the Mediterranean coastline, with a copse of white pines or oak, esparto grass, palmito, kermes oak, rosemary and lavender, amongst other species. In the spring there is an abundance of many wild flowers.

Half way take the right fork, the path becomes more difficult and care should be taken. A recommended alternative is to the left just before the beach, a steep climb to the flat plateau from where you can reach the beach of Moraig of Benitachell.

Walking in Moraira

Moraira Gardens along El Portet Road

Moraira Gardens along El Portet Road

For those who enjoy a gentle walk, this is one of the most enjoyable in Moraira and a great way to see some of the glorious scenery.
Start at the main car park where you can leave your car all day free of charge, aviod Fridays as this is market day and it’s held in the car park itself. On leaving the car park on foot by the Medical Centre exit, turn left and continue past the olive tree roundabout to the palm tree roundabout at the crossroads. Take the first right and walk along the cobbled street (Calatayud) to the bottom. Here, if you wish, you can watch the fish auction, you will see the building facing you, where the daily catch is auctioned at 10.0 a.m. (except public holidays). It is worth watching this as the auctioneer rattles off the prices at an alarming rate, starting with the highest price and working down accordingly, only stopping when a customer signals he will pay the price. You can join in if you wish but remember the fish is sold in boxes and most goes to the restaurants.

Continue past the restaurants on your left, turn left and cut through to a steep flight of steps. These will take you to the main road leading to El Portet. Up the steps and turn right and continue for about two hundred yards until you come to the coastal gardens. Descend into the gardens, sit awhile and enjoy the views over the yacht marina and looking towards Calpe rock.

Carry on waliking along the pathway to the end of the gardens, you will be back on the main road, overlooking El Portet beach, another glorious view. This is a very safe beach, delightful for swimming and there are two beachside cafes where you can enjoy a drink and/or lunch, literally by the water·s edge. For those more energetic you can climb to the tower above the beach. To do this go back to the first road on your right- follow to the top-turn right-follow to the junction-turn left-go up the hill to the very top and on the left you will see a pathway that leads up to the top of the hill where you will find the tower. The views over to Javea and beyond are well worth the 25 min climb!
