La Montaneta walk, Lliber

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 4 months ago

This is an easy walk lasting about one and a half hours starting and finishing in Lliber and circles the hill, Montaneta just behind the village.

Lliber is a typical Spanish village and is just off the main tourist route on the road from Jalon to Senija and Gata de Gorgos. The village has an ancient church, with stations of the cross and friendly bars.

To begin start in the Plaza M ajor and walk east to find Calle St Juan which leads to Calle Virgin and becomes a concrete road as it climbs steadily across the southern slopes of Montaneta. Pass between villas and some old fincas and at the top of this road, just before you reach the motor road to Gata, and turn to the left to descend gently along the northern flank of the hill back towards the Jalon.

The track dips and then rises right before resuming its westerly course under the slopes of Montaneta. Ignore the path down to the river and continue round the Montaneta. You will see Montgo in the distance. Continue along the path which will bring you back to Lliber.

Walking in Denia

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 4 months ago

Stroll by the water's edge!

This walk is a delightful flat stroll along the coast in Denia. A very pleasant way to travel to Denia is by train which travels from Benidorm, stopping at Altea, Calpe, Benissa, Teulada, Gata and La Xara.

When you arrive at Denia, walk towards the coast, just a hundred yards or so and turn right, walking south until you arrive at the fork, the right hand fork continues towards Javea. Take the left hand fork and turn left at any of the lanes on the left which will take you to the sea.

Here you can continue walking along the water's edge for about a mile and there are a couple of restaurants and bars along the way. The whole return walk from the station is approximately four miles.

Calpe Attractions

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 5 months ago

The town of Calpe on the Costa Blanca has many attractions, the first one being the Ifach Rock.

This is the smallest Natural Park on the Mediterranean and it is possible to climb it.

This walk takes approximately two hours and the trail starts in El Aula de la Naturaleza, which houses an exhibition hall exploring the protected natural spaces and displaying specimens of flora and fauna from the park itself.

The path to the summit is bordered by lavender, pine trees and other shrubs.

The route passes by the remains of an ancient wall rebuilt in the 14th century and continues on to a tunnel which cuts through the rock and opens up on the north east side.

There are some glorious beaches and coves in and around Calpe, some of the rocks form sculptural figures and also here are archaeological sites.

Just below the rock there is the fish auction and port and if you visit this area in the afternoon you will see the fishing boats coming in with their catch and unloading, ready to start the fish auction at 5.0 p.m. You can watch the auction from a special walkway. There is a screen which shows information on each crate of fish with its lot number, the type of fish, the weight and the starting price, which is gradually lowered until a buyer presses the Purchase button and stops the process.

Just behind the fish auction all the fishing nets are lined out to dry in the sun and behind this again are several fish restaurants, all vying for your custom. They are all very competitive and a very good three course meal, including wine can be bought for as little as €8.50 plus VAT.

The centre of Calpe is a long street starting at the sea and climbing to the top, with many shops, cafes and restaurants and the old town at the top on the left hand side also has many tapas bars and restaurants.

Pinos Walk

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 5 months ago

For a delightful walk of 9 kilometres this one takes some beating. Drive to Benissa and at the end of the village on the N 332 in the direction of Calpe you will see on the right hand side a fork road signposted Jalon. Take this road and when you reach the T junction cross straight over towards Pinos.

This road is a little winding and there are spectacular views of the Calpe rock. When you reach the village of Pinos drive past the restaurant on the right hand side and cross the bridge. You can park here.

There is a right hand fork, take this road and it is a gentle ascent for approximately 3 kilometres. You pass the Iris gardens on the left after about one and a half kilometres and continue through the pleasant valley of Marnes.

At the top of the valley, you will see some farm houses called Partida del Cao. Follow the track on the right hand side for about two hundred yards and when you see the red painted sign on the left take the narrow track which climbs to the top between two peaks.

At the top there is a plateau which is a lovely spot for a picnic. Here there are splendid views of Calpe rock and the sea. From here cross to the other side and turn right with the mountain on your left and follow the track for about 2 kilometres. You will see splendid views on your right looking down to where you have walked.

After the 2 kilometres take a sharp right, almost a U bend and continue on this track which will bring you back to the same road you came on.

Walk to the look out tower above El Portet.

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 5 months ago

To walk to the tower above El Portet drive to the car park at El Portet and walk down towards the beach. Just before you reach the beach there is a turning on the left hand side, take this road and follow the S.L. (local pathway signs).

These local walks are shown with S.L. and do not exceed 10 kilometres. They have two stripes, one white and one green and indicate both the location and the direction of pathways.

Where the path divides in two continue towards “Cova de la Sendra”. Here there is a steep slope, do not leave this path as it is a protected area for flora. There is a variety of shrubs and plants, rosemary, heather, esparto grass etc. all of which must be respected.

At the end of this steep slope we reach a flat area where the pathway divides in two, to the left it descends towards the “Cova de la Sendra”, a steep slope. To the right the path continues on a plain towards the “Torre Vigia” (look out tower).

Cliff walk to Cala Moraig

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 5 months ago

This is a short walk following the cliff path and is extremely picturesque. To begin the walk, drive towards Cumbre de Sol. Leaving Moraira and driving towards Benitachell can reach this.

Drive to the crossroads in Benitachell, turn right in the direction of Javea and about 100 yards down on the right hand side there is a right fork which will take you to Cumbre de Sol. Just before you reach the beach at Cumbre de Sol there is a sign on the right hand side pointing to Cala de Moraig.

Just a little further on you can park your car and walk back to the path. There is a sign with information about the route.

Just follow the footpath, which wends its way along to the bay with the sea on your left. The way down to the beach is a little steep so take care.

Along the path there are signs S.L. These signs indicate that the walks do not exceed 10 kilometers and have two stripes, one white and one green, which indicate the location and direction of pathways.

The object is to recover the routes, which run through the heart of nature, following old paths, which, in the past, were the communication between places and towns.

Ecological Walk in Calpe

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 5 months ago

There is a most delightful short walk by the sea shore in Calpe. This is only about two kilometres there and back but is well worth doing.

Begin at the Yacht Club which is situated just below the Ifach Rock. To reach this from Moraira drive along the coast road towards Calpe and when you arrive at the lake on the right hand side take the last exit of the roundabout towards the fish port.

There are plenty of free parking places around the port. Walk towards the direction of the rock and you will arrive at the Yacht Club. Continue walking and you will enter the ecological area.

This follows the rocks along the coast and has plenty of flowers and shrubs along the way. There is even a drinking tap if you are thirsty.

If there are rock climbers about when you go there are quite fantastic views of their prowess.

To round off your visit, there are some delightful fish restaurants all along the port.

A Walk to the top of Montgo

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 8 months ago

Montgo Mountain

Half way view!

The Montgo mountain lies in the northern Costa Blanca. On the north side you have Denia and Javea on the south.

The Montgo is an important nature park that offers a range of interesting varieties of Mediterranean flora.

In the 19th century, the peak of the Montgo mountain served as a reference point for calculating the Paris meridian.

If you look at the mountain from the Javea side you can see an indentation which looks like the eye of an elephant.

To commence your walk to the top you can start at the path which is just outside the village of Jesus Pobre on the road towards Javea on the left hand side.

The walk takes approximately three and a half hours each way and the path is mainly a rough track of stones.
The last part of the walk to reach the summit is a bit of a scramble but the view at the top is worth the effort. On a clear day you can see the island of Ibiza.

The mountain is elongated, rich in vegetation and rises sharply from the sea to guard the coast from a height of 753 metres.
This peak surveys the entire Marina Alta district. In the spring there are hundreds of different wild flowers en route. Remember to take plenty of water with you.

A Walk to Benimarco

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 8 months ago

If you live in Moraira, drive to the Avenue de Mediterraneo (the dual carriageway in Teulada) and begin your walk from here. Continue to the camino de San Miguel where you will pass the Creueta del Ave Maria (a cast iron cross with a ceramic inscription).

Take the lane to the right and you will arrive at the Font del Horta which has two outlets and a small watering place. The fountain gives tranquility and natural beauty.

From there we can continue on the Cami del Boticari, starting behind this font. On arriving at the Cami del Pouet del Moro, we turn to the right, passing in front of the well which dates back to the middle ages, until we reach the road to Benimarco, a typical rural hamlet shared by both Teulada and Benisa with many interesting properties in Benisa, Teulada and Moraira.

Along the walk you will see many worksheds, typical of this region.
We finish our tour in the square where the hermitage of Sant Jaume lies. The building, with a single nave, is comparable to those of the so-called “conquest” churches . In the square there is a balcony with a great view of the sea.

You can walk back to Teulada via Cami de Sant Miquel in which case you walk through Cami de Buseit, which starts by the hermitage and finishes on the urbanisation “La Coma dels Frares”, a beautiful countryside.

Moraira Walks

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 8 months ago

A walk from El Portet to the beach of Moraig of Benitachell

This is a most beautiful walk of approximately 4 kilometres, estimate about 3hrs. 15 minutes there and back. The route runs through one of the most beautiful and striking areas of this countryside that ends at the beach of La Cala.

Start the walk from the Cami de la Viuda (this is the road before you reach the beach of El Portet in Moraira.

Continue uphill towards Calle Canario, the path is then signposted.

You are approaching one of the last areas that retain a great part of the Mediterranean coastline, with a copse of white pines or oak, esparto grass, palmito, kermes oak, rosemary and lavender, amongst other species. In the spring there is an abundance of many wild flowers.

Half way take the right fork, the path becomes more difficult and care should be taken. A recommended alternative is to the left just before the beach, a steep climb to the flat plateau from where you can reach the beach of Moraig of Benitachell.

Walking in Moraira

Posted by: Anthony Bloom 9 months ago

Moraira gardens along El Portet Rd

For those who enjoy a gentle walk, this is one of the most enjoyable in Moraira and a great way to see some of the glorious scenery.

Start at the main car park where you can leave your car all day free of charge, aviod Fridays as this is market day and it's held in the car park itself. On leaving the car park on foot by the Medical Centre exit, turn left and continue past the olive tree roundabout to the palm tree roundabout at the crossroads. Take the first right and walk along the cobbled street (Calatayud) to the bottom. Here, if you wish, you can watch the fish auction, you will see the building facing you, where the daily catch is auctioned at 10.0 a.m. (except public holidays). It is worth watching this as the auctioneer rattles off the prices at an alarming rate, starting with the highest price and working down accordingly, only stopping when a customer signals he will pay the price. You can join in if you wish but remember the fish is sold in boxes and most goes to the restaurants.

Continue past the restaurants on your left, turn left and cut through to a steep flight of steps. These will take you to the main road leading to El Portet. Up the steps and turn right and continue for about two hundred yards until you come to the coastal gardens. Descend into the gardens, sit awhile and enjoy the views over the yacht marina and looking towards Calpe rock.

Carry on waliking along the pathway to the end of the gardens, you will be back on the main road, overlooking El Portet beach, another glorious view. This is a very safe beach, delightful for swimming and there are two beachside cafes where you can enjoy a drink and/or lunch, literally by the water·s edge. For those more energetic you can climb to the tower above the beach. To do this go back to the first road on your right- follow to the top-turn right-follow to the junction-turn left-go up the hill to the very top and on the left you will see a pathway that leads up to the top of the hill where you will find the tower. The views over to Javea and beyond are well worth the 25 min climb!
